Troparul şi viaţa Sf. Luchilian

Pomenirea Sfântului Mucenic Luchilian şi a celor împreună cu el patru prunci: Ipatie, Paul, Dionisie, Claudie şi Paula fecioara şi muceniţa.

Acest Sfânt Luchilian a trăit în zilele împăratului Aurelian, mai înainte preot idolesc fiind, bătrân de vârstă şi cărunt, locuind aproape de cetatea Nicomidiei. Deci întorcându-se spre credinţa lui Hristos şi fiind adus înaintea comitelui Silvan, pentru ca să se lepede de Hristos şi să-şi ţină legea cea dintâi, a fost zdrobit la fălci şi bătut cu toiege, şi spânzurat cu capul în jos. După aceea a fost băgat în temniţă, şi a aflat acolo băgaţi trei tineri pentru credinţa cea în Hristos. Apoi iarăşi a ieşit cu dânşii înaintea comitelui şi stând nemişcat în credinţa lui Hristos, a fost băgat într-un cuptor şi ars împreună cu tinerii aceia; dar pogorându-se ploaie de sus, a stins focul şi au ieşit sănătoşi; şi primind hotărârea cea de pierzare împreună cu tinerii a fost adus în Bizanţ din porunca comitelui. Deci tinerilor le-au tăiat capetele, iar pe sfântul l-au spânzurat pe o cruce şi aşa şi-a dat sufletul la Dumnezeu, fiind acolo de faţă şi Sfânta fecioară Paula, care pe cale avea grijă de rănile lui.

Şi dacă s-au săvârşit sfinţii, Sfânta Paula le-a luat moaştele lor, şi a purtat grijă de ele pentru că ea era credincioasă din moşii ei, şi avea şi slujba aceasta de a intra în temniţă, să slujească, să lecuiască şi să hrănească pe cei ce pătimeau pentru Hristos. Deci fiind şi ea prinsă a fost adusă către comit şi nevrând a jertfi idolilor, întâi au dezbrăcat-o şi au bătut-o cu bice, după aceea cu toiege. Şi topindu-se foarte la trup de nevoinţă şi de durerea rănilor, prin arătare de înger s-a făcut sănătoasă, şi luă îndrăzneală la mucenicie. Apoi iarăşi aducându-se înaintea comitelui, a fost din nou mult chinuită în felurite chipuri şi primind hotărârea cea de pierzare şi sosind la Bizanţ după porunca comitelui, şi mergând la locul unde se săvârşiseră Sfântul Luchilian cu tinerii, i s-a tăiat capul, şi aşa a luat cununa muceniciei şi se face praznicul lor în biserica preasfintei lor mucenicii, ce este aproape de Arhanghelul Mihail la Oxia.

Ἡ μνήμη τους ἀναφέρεται καὶ στὶς 19 Ἰανουαρίου. Ἡ Σύναξή τους ἐτελεῖτο στὸν οἶκο τοῦ Πατριάρχου Ἀναστασίου στὴν Ὀξεία, μικρὴ νῆσο τῆς Προποντίδος, ἢ σὲ ὁμώνυμη τοποθεσία κείμενη κοντὰ στὴ λεγόμενη «Ἐμβόλων τοῦ Δομνίνου» στὴν Κωνσταντινούπολη.

Ὡς ἄστρον φαεινόν, ἐκ νυκτὸς τῆς ἀπάτης, ὦ Λουκιλλιανέ, εὐσεβῶς ἀναλάμψας, νομίμως ἠγώνισαι, καὶ τὸν δόλιον ἔκτεινας· ὅθεν πρέσβευε, σὺν τῇ θεόφρονι Παύλῃ, καὶ τοῖς τέσσαρσι, Παισὶ Χριστῷ Ἀθλοφόρε, ὑπὲρ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν.

Μαρτύρων Χριστοῦ, ἰσότιμος γεγένησαι, βασάνων σφοδρῶν, κατατολμήσας ἔνδοξε· καὶ σὺν Παύλῃ ἔκραζες, καὶ Παισὶ τοῖς θείοις τῷ Κτίστῃ σου· Ἰδοὺ ὡς πρόβατα σφαγῆς, θυόμεθα Σῶτερ, διὰ πόθον τὸν σόν.

Μεγαλυνάριον.
Σπόρον γεωργήσας τὸν λογικόν, Μαρτύρων ἐδρέψω, δι’ ἀθλήσεως τὸν καρπόν, δι’ οὗ τοὺς τιμῶντας, ὦ Λουκιλλιανέ σε, ἐκτρέφεις ἀπορρήτως, ἐν θείῳ Πνεύματι.

Saint Lucillian was a pagan priest during the reign of the Roman emperor Aurelian (270-275). In his old age he became persuaded of the falseness of the pagan religion, and with all his heart he turned to the faith in Christ the Savior, and was baptized.

Under the influence of his preaching many pagans were converted to Christianity. Then certain Jews, seeing that he was spreading faith in Christ Whom they crucified, reported Lucillian to the Nicomedia prefect Silvanus, who urged the old man to return to idol-worship. When he refused, they smashed the saint’s jawbone, beat him with rods and suspended him head downward, and then they locked him in prison. Here he met four youths who were confessors of Christianity, Claudius, Hypatius, Paul and Dionysius. St Lucillian urged them to stand firm in the Faith, and to fear neither tortures nor death.

After a while they brought them to trial and then threw them into a red-hot furnace. Suddenly, rain fell and extinguished the flames, and the martyrs remained unharmed. The governor sentenced them to death, sending them to Byzantium to be executed. The holy youths were beheaded by the sword, and the holy martyr Lucillian was nailed to a cross with many nails.

The holy virgin Paula witnessed the contest of the holy martyrs. She had dedicated herself to the service of those suffering for Christ. She provided food to Christian prisoners, washed their wounds, brought medications, and also buried the bodies of martyrs. After the death of St Lucillian and the four young men, she returned to Nicomedia and continued with her holy service. The holy virgin was arrested and cast into a furnace, but by the power of God she remained unharmed. Then they sent her off to Byzantium, where the holy martyr was beheaded.
