I Admire How Metropolitan Onuphry Has Handled This Crisis

Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol

His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasius of Limassol is someone who doesn’t need to be introduced in the Orthodox world. He enjoys authority by virtue of his high spiritual life and is known as a man of prayer and strict defender of Orthodoxy. That is why it was important for us to find out his personal view regarding the situation in Ukraine.

Entering the room in which the interview was to take place, our eyes landed on the many images of ascetics, saints, and Cypriot hierarchs. All four corners of the room had crosses. All of this created a certain atmosphere, where the spiritual becomes central. “Are we going to do the entire interview about Ukraine?” Vladyka asked.

—Good afternoon, Vladyka. I am grateful to you for the opportunity to conduct today’s interview. Indeed, the situation in Ukraine has become perhaps the most discussed topic in the entire Orthodox world, therefore we wanted to talk precisely about that. Cyprus was one of the first countries to accept Christianity, and the Cypriot Church has a rich history and great experience in the Christian life. Therefore, the proposal of the Cypriot Church to create a platform for inter-Orthodox negotiations here in Cyprus is quite natural, and we see that it has already brought its first fruits—the Jerusalem and Antiochian Churches are ready for dialogue and intend to overcome the crisis in their relations. Does the Cypriot Church have a vision for how to get out of the crisis that has developed in the ecclesiastical sphere in Ukraine?

Philaret Denisenko and his “Kiev Patriarchate” (KP), which he has led for nearly 30 years, were busy this weekend, consecrating two new “bishops” who had just been elected at Thursdays’ KP Local Council.

The “Honorary Patriarch” had been saying ever since the Patriarchate of Constantinople gave the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) a tomos of autocephaly in January that, in fact, the KP still existed. He even declared that the there is no new church—the tomos was given to the KP, although from Constantinople’s point of view, the KP was necessarily dissolved before the December “unification council.”

Philaret stepped up his rhetoric in the past month, expressing his great disappointment with the tomos, with his role in the OCU, and with the way he believes “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko and ex-President Petro Poroshenko deceived him. In the end, it became clear that Philaret would not remain with the OCU, and on Thursday the KP was officially revived with the holding of a Local Council in Kiev.

The Commission for the Canonization of Saints of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church met yesterday at the Kiev Caves Lavra to consider material on the glorification of four new local saints.

All four of the great Church figures under consideration reposed in the 20th century, and two served as rectors of the Kiev Theological Academy, reports the Kherson Diocese of the UOC.

Following the meeting, the materials on the Academy rectors Bishop Sylvester (Malevansky) of Kanev (+ 1908) and Archbishop Vasily (Bogdashevsky) of Kanev (+ 1933), Academy professor Archpriest Alexander Glagolev (+ 1937), and Priest John Mogilev (+ 1918) were submitted for consideration to the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The Commission also submitted materials on five other candidates for glorification at its late-February meeting.

***

The Union of Orthodox Journalists provides biographical information on the two bishops:

His Grace Bishop Sylvester (Malevansky) was the rector of the Kiev Theological Academy, a theologian, and a spiritual writer. His father was a priest and he studied at the Volyn Theological Seminary. He served for a while as a village priest, and when his matushka reposed, he entered the Kiev Academy, later becoming its rector. He was the abbot of the Kiev-Brotherhood Theophany Monastery, which was destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1935.

His Eminence Archbishop Vasily (Bogdashevsky) was a rector of the Academy and a doctor of theology. His father was also a priest and he also studied at the Volyn Seminary. He decided to become a priest after he was widowed. He was also tonsured into monasticism at the Kiev Caves Lavra and was later consecrated as a bishop at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kiev. In 1921, he signed the appeal of the bishops of the Ukrainian Church to the faithful not to accept the false 1921 council that declared autocephaly. He was meek and accessible to all and deeply faithful. He was a pillar of Orthodoxy in Kiev in the hard times, protecting the holy Church from the renovationists and other schismatics by his sermons.

The hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and faithful of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church were out in force yesterday, sanctifying the streets of their cities and towns with cross processions in honor of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, when the Church commemorates the great triumph over the iconoclasts and proclaims the truth of the one Orthodox Church.

More than 20,000 Ukrainian faithful participated in cross processions in Odessa, Zaporozhye, and Rivne. More than 10,000 participated in the procession in Odessa alone, reports the diocesan press service.

Following the Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Agafangel of Odessa at the city’s Holy Transfiguration Cathedral, clergy and parishioners from throughout the city began to arrive at the church, with the citywide procession beginning at noon with a prayer for peace in Ukraine and the welfare of its pious people.

More than 10,000 pilgrims came out bearing holy icons and relics and the holy Cross, singing Church hymns. Following the procession, Met. Agafangel read a prayer for the preservation of Ukraine from all troubles and sorrows, after which he addressed those gathered with an archpastoral word, emphasizing the importance of preserving the holy Orthodox faith.

At the same time, a large procession made its way through the central streets of Zaporozhye with the miraculous Kasperov Icon of the Mother of God, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye and Melitopol, reports the diocesan press service.

A number of Cossacks participated in the procession, showing their strong faith in the protection of the Mother of God and their loyalty to the true Ukrainian Church.

The procession made its way to the Holy Protection Cathedral where the rite of the Triumph of Orthodoxy was celebrated. Met. Luke also addressed the crowd with a word on the importance of preserving the unity of the holy Orthodox Church.

“Remember what the holy Apostle Paul said: And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit Which is given unto us (Rom. 5:3-5). I wish all of us strength of spirit on this saving path of Great Lent, and that our souls, having accomplished the feat of repentance, would become real lamps, light to this world,” Met. Luke said, encouraging his flock.

Several thousands of faithful also took part in the cross procession in Rivne, led by the diocesan vicar His Grace Bishop Pimen of Dubenske, with the blessing of the ruling hierarch His Eminence Metropolitan Bartholomew of Rivne and Ostrog.

The faithful from the city and the surrounding region processed nearly 2 miles bearing the patronal icons of all of the churches of Rivne and the miraculous icons of the diocesan monasteries.

The procession ended at St. George’s Cathedral courtyard, where a solemn moleben of the Triumph of Orthodoxy was celebrated, after which Bp. Pimen addressed the faithful with an archpastoral word.

SCHISMATIC-NATIONALISTS ASSAULT CANONICAL BISHOP, LOCK CLERGY AND FAITHFUL IN CHURCH (+VIDEO) [En]

martie 18th, 2019 Fără comentarii

Luka-Meleshkovskaya, Ukraine, March 18, 2019

The clergy and faithful of the Holy Transfiguration Church in the Vinnitsa village of Luka-Meleshkovskaya, having been locked in the church by impious nationalist-schismatics, were forced to knock down the door of their church to defend their bishop who was being physically assaulted in the church yard.

The Divine Liturgy was to begin at 8:30 on Saturday morning, but schismatic-nationalists filled the locks off the doors with resin the night before to prevent the faithful from entering the church. Nevertheless, the parishioners cut the locks to the doors and guarded the church overnight. In the morning they were locked inside.

Local media spread false reports that random bullies had gone to the church and broken the windows and doors, but in fact the local faithful, who had been guarding their church from seizure overnight, were attempting to get out, reports the press service of the Vinnitsa Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

“All the Vinnitsa media are writing about how they broke the doors and windows in Luka-Meleshkovskaya. But everything began with them locking up Fr. Basil, the rector of the church, and using physical force against me, the ruling hierarch,” His Grace Bishop Barsanuphius of Vinnitsa and Bar wrote on his Facebook page.

The bishop said that he went to meet with the “activists” to hear them out, but they weren’t interested in listening to him as well.

“When Chirkun, a priest of Vladyka Simeon [the former canonical hierarch of Vinntisa—O.C.] arrived, he gave the command to throw me over the fence of the church. That’s how they propose to peacefully resolve controversial issues,” Bp. Barsanuphius wrote.

When they began to use physical force against the bishop and to force him up against the fence, Fr. Vasily and the parishioners saw it from within the church and decided to force the emergency doors open, causing them damage, to get to Bp. Barsanuphius to protect him.

The main moments of the confrontation were captured on video. The faithful were eventually able to enter the church again, with Bp. Barsanuphius celebrating the Divine Liturgy.

The Holy Transfiguration parish voted in favor of remaining in the canonical Ukrainian Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine on January 26, though the territorial community met the same day in the local country club, voting to transfer to the schismatic church. The religious community then regathered in the church and recognized the country club vote as invalid.

APELUL UNUI EPISCOP UCRAINEAN CĂTRE ORGANIZAȚIA NAȚIUNILOR UNITE ȘI CĂTRE UNIUNEA EUROPEANĂ (VIDEO, EN, Update RO)

februarie 18th, 2019 1 comentariu
