An interview with a Moslem who embraced Christianity
„Lorsque j’ai visité une église orthodoxe, c’était seulement afin de voir une autre tradition… Cependant, quand je suis entré dans une église orthodoxe pour la première fois, quelque chose m’est arrivé, que je n’avais pas vécu dans un temple bouddhiste ou dans une autre „tradition”, quelque chose dans mon cœur a dit que c’était „la maison”, que toute ma quête était finie. „
Telles sont les paroles d’un des plus grands pères de notre temps, un homme de sainte vie, le hiéromoine Seraphim (Rose), qui vécut en Amérique, au monastère de Saint-Herman d’Alaska, à Platina, en Californie.
Aujourd’hui, nous parlons avec Alexis, un ancien musulman, qui comme le Père Seraphim, chercha la vérité pendant longtemps. Au moment où il découvrit le Christ et où il vint à la vraie foi en Lui, à l’Orthodoxie, il comprit les paroles du Sauveur: La vérité vous rendra libres (Jn 8:32). Bien qu’Alexis soit devenu orthodoxe il y a seulement un an, à un peu plus de quarante ans, il nous a impressionnés par la simplicité de sa foi, son amour sincère du prochain et du Christ Sauveur.
-Je suis né musulman. Je suis devenu orphelin dans mon enfance, et j’ai grandi avec mes frères. Leurs personnalités sont à l’opposé de la mienne. Ils aimaient être avec les gens alors que j’étais solitaire, introverti. Bien que je ne connaissais pas le Seigneur Christ, quand j’ai entendu la parole de Dieu, j’ai eu des frissons dans le dos. Je L’ai beaucoup cherché. Même comme enfant, je voulais savoir où était la vérité, et je cherchais la vérité, mais je ne savais pas où la trouver. J’ai perdu la paix, j’ai été agité, et je ne savais pas où aller, ou quoi faire pour trouver la vérité. Dans mon ignorance, j’ai prié, „Dieu, aide-moi à trouver la vérité!” À l’âge de vingt ans, après avoir connu une grande épreuve, j’ai trouvé le Sauveur, le Christ, ou plus exactement, Il m’a trouvé. J’ai acheté un livre dans une librairie intitulé, Le chemin vers le Christ, livre qui a changé ma vie. Puis, après plusieurs années, je lisais la Bible. Bien que le Nouveau Testament ait fait une forte impression sur moi, parce que je me suis découvert une fois de plus dans ce livre, je ne suis pour autant venu immédiatement à l’Orthodoxie. Je voulais quelque chose qui pourrait me confirmer que la vérité est dans l’Orthodoxie. Dieu m’a montré où est la vérité l’an dernier lors de la levée de boucliers dans les médias sur le problème des passeports biométriques. Je connaissais très bien le Nouveau Testament parce que je l’avais lu plusieurs fois, et j’ai vu que la prophétie de l’Apocalypse est accomplie de nos jours. J’ai considéré que c’était le signe que j’attendais. Quand j’étais plus jeune, un moine m’a donné le livre, Ne renie pas le Christ, écrit par un prêtre du Mont Athos. Dans ce livre sont décrits les événements que nous subissons maintenant et qui préparent la voie à la venue de l’Antéchrist et à la marque de la bête. Ainsi, après cette confirmation, je suis devenu orthodoxe et j’ai reçu le Baptême.
-Vous aviez cherché la vérité ailleurs?
-J’avais beaucoup lu sur le yoga. Mais j’ai compris que c’est une grande duperie, parce qu’il y a une différence essentielle entre le yoga et les enseignements divins de l’Ecriture Sainte. J’ai étudié le yoga, mais le Christ Sauveur m’a protégé et je ne l’ai pas pratiqué.
-Comment a eu lieu votre conversion?
-Quand je reconnus où était la vérité, je suis allé vers le Père Arsène (Papacioc) à Techirghiol (Roumanie) et là j’ai parlé avec ce saint homme. Il m’a appris ce que j’avais à faire. Il m’a dit que je devrais parler avec le prêtre de la paroisse à laquelle j’appartiens. J’ai suivi les conseils du Père, et durant le Grand Carême ma fille et moi, nous avons été baptisés. J’avais l’habitude d’aller à l’église souvent même avant le baptême. J’écoutais les offices, mais je ne faisais pas le signe de Croix. Je considérais que puisque j’étais musulman, je ne devrais pas faire le signe de Croix sur moi-même. Satan m’a égaré par cette pensée; c’est seulement après le baptême que j’ai commencé à me signer.
Avez-vous changé d’état émotionnel après le baptême?
-Bien sûr, je crois que le Seigneur est avec moi et m’aide. Maintenant, je jeûne, je prie le matin et le soir, et je vois que peu importe ce que je demande de mon Sauveur, Il m’écoute et répond à ma demande. Il n’y a pas longtemps, Dieu a voulu tester ma foi par ma femme, qui souffrait de maladie. J’ai prié pour sa santé, et Il l’a guérie. Regardant ces vingt années de recherche passées, je vois que Dieu ne m’a jamais abandonné. Alors que j’étais musulman, je n’ai pas dit les prières que chaque chrétien sait: „Notre Père” (la prière du Seigneur), „je crois” (le Credo), je priais selon ce que mon cœur me suggérait. A chaque fois, Dieu a exaucé ma prière. Aujourd’hui, beaucoup de gens prient Dieu de leur donner de l’argent, la richesse, ou Lui demandent des choses qui ne Lui plaisent pas. Mais je prie pour qu’il accorde la santé pour moi et ma famille, et qu’Il nous préserve inébranlable dans la foi droite, afin que nous ne l’abandonnions pas. En ces temps où nous vivons, il est important de rester fidèles à la vraie foi.
-Comment votre baptême s’est-il passé?
-Le prêtre dans l’église où j’ai été baptisé, m’a dit que je devrais choisir un saint qui est commémoré peu de temps avant le jour que le sacrement serait effectué. J’ai été très inquiet: quel saint devais-je choisir comme saint patron? Le 17 Mars, quelques jours avant mon baptême, j’ai entendu un exposé sur Saint Alexis, l’homme de Dieu. J’ai été touché par son humilité et son ascétisme parfait, et j’ai décidé d’être baptisé du nom d’Alexis. Le baptême a été réalisé selon le rite orthodoxe, je portais une longue robe blanche, et le Père m’a plongé dans le baptistère trois fois. Même si je n’étais pas immédiatement conscient de l’importance de ce sacrement, avec le temps je sentis le travail de la grâce de l’Esprit Saint. On change presque complètement, mais ce changement se produit graduellement.
Maintenant, j’ai une telle faim et soif de Dieu que quand j’entre dans une librairie orthodoxe, il semble que je pourrais acheter tous les livres. J’ai lu et relu la Bible, et chaque fois je comprends bien plus profondément. Il y a une sorte d’aimant dans mon âme qui m’attire à la parole de Dieu…
-Vous avez parlé du sacrement de baptême. Comment les sacrements de la confession et de la communion agissent-ils sur votre âme?
-Sans confession et communion, on ne peut pas atteindre le Royaume de Dieu. Ils sont trompés ceux qui pensent que s’ils vont souvent à l’église et font de bonnes actions, ce sera suffisant pour leur salut. Il n’est personne sans péché, et le Sauveur peut nous purifier de Son Corps et Son Sang que nous recevons dans la Sainte Communion. Le Sauveur est descendu vers les gens et nous a libérés des chaînes des péchés par Son incarnation, Sa crucifixion et Sa résurrection. S’Il n’était pas venu, nous serions morts dans nos péchés, nous serions les esclaves du péché. Par conséquent, la confession fréquente et la communion sont nécessaires afin d’être libérés des chaînes des péchés qui nous maintiennent éloignés du Très-Haut. Plus dignement vous communiez, plus vous serez purifiés intérieurement. L’âme est comme une vigne: mieux on la nettoie, plus elle est belle et mieux elle se développe; mieux vous purifiez l’âme par la confession et la communion, plus vous sentez que vous êtes plus fermes dans la foi au Christ et plus proche de Lui. Grandissant dans la foi, vous ne pensez plus si fort aux choses matérielles, vous placez le spirituel en premier.
-Le Christ nous appelle tous au salut. Mais il y a des gens parmi nous qui n’entendent pas la voix du Seigneur…
-J’ai vu que quand une personne est dans l’affliction, elle pense plus à Dieu, l’homme cherche Dieu quand les épreuves se referment sur lui. Je connais aussi que beaucoup de gens mécréants qui ont complètement changé en raison des épreuves, et ils sont devenus de bons chrétiens. Il serait bon que les inondations qui ont frappé notre pays poussent plus de gens à réfléchir… S’ils pensaient aux commandements de Dieu, ils verraient le lien entre ces catastrophes et les grands péchés commis par le peuple: la fornication, la pornographie et l’homosexualité , qui attirent la juste colère de Dieu. Dans la Bible, il y a de nombreux exemples dans lesquels on voit que depuis la fondation même du monde, Dieu a puni les gens de la désobéissance, pour des vies passées dans une conduite scandaleuse.
–Quel parabole du Nouveau Testament a fait la plus grande impression sur vous?
-J’aime particulièrement la parabole sur les dix vierges: les cinq vierges sages qui avaient de l’huile dans leur lampe, et les cinq vierges folles qui n’en avaient pas. Les lampes sont la foi, et l’huile est la prière et les bonnes œuvres. Si vous n’avez pas d’huile dans votre lampe, elle ne brûle pas. C’est-à-dire, si vous ne priez pas et ne faites pas de bonnes actions, si vous ne donnez pas l’aumône et n’aidez pas les gens qui sont en difficulté, votre foi est morte. Cela signifie que vous avez à prier et à aider les gens qui sont près de vous, afin de verser de l’huile dans la lampe. Cette huile est votre lumière, qui vous conduit au Christ. La foi doit être unie à la prière et aux bonnes actions. Cela me réjouit quand un pauvre vient à moi et me demande quelque chose, parce que je trouve le Christ en lui. Le Sauveur nous a dit clairement ce qu’il exigera de nous au Jugement: Car j’ai eu faim, et vous m’avez donné à manger; j’ai eu soif, et vous m’avez donné à boire: j’étais un étranger et vous m’avez recueilli: nu , et vous m’avez vêtu; j’étais malade, et vous m’avez visité; j’étais en prison, et vous êtes venus vers moi (Mt 25,35-36). Cela signifie que si vous voulez être sauvés, vous devez aider beaucoup.
-Beaucoup de gens craignent la fin du monde; ils craignent qu’ils ne supporteront pas cette épreuve. Qu’en pensez-vous?
-Je ne crains pas la fin du monde. Au contraire. Ensuite, on verra qui est dans la vraie foi, qui est dans la Vérité. Je pense que si votre âme est pure et en paix avec Dieu, vous ne devez pas craindre quoi que ce soit. Qu’est-ce que nous confessons dans le Symbole de la Foi (le Credo)? „J’attends la résurrection des morts, et la vie du siècle à venir.” Là, dans le Royaume des Cieux, sera la vie avec le Christ, brillante, pure, et complètement différente de la vie que nous vivons maintenant. Les chrétiens orthodoxes recherchent cette vie. Je sais que des moments très difficiles sont à venir. Je veux que Dieu me donne la force de devenir un confesseur, quand Il le désirera. Pour l’instant, j’approfondis ma foi, et j’étudie les Evangiles afin d’acquérir la force d’être un confesseur. Je sais que je ne peux pas le faire par moi-même, mais seulement dans l’unité que crée l’Église. Dans l’Apocalypse, il est dit que lorsque l’Antéchrist viendra, il se présentera comme le Sauveur et séduira beaucoup de gens. Si je vis dans ces temps, je veux avoir la force de dire aux gens que l’Antéchrist est un menteur; pour leur dire Qui est la Vérité.
-Avez-vous dit à vos frères que vous êtes devenu orthodoxe?
-Je me prépare pour ce moment. Ils voient des croix et des icônes dans ma maison et la voiture, mais je ne leur ai pas encore ai parlé de mon baptême. J’attends le moment opportun pour leur parler de mes changements, pour leur profit.
-S’ils vous le demandent, vous nierez [avoir été baptisé]?
-Non, je vais leur dire la vérité en face. Vous savez, le temps viendra, et il ne reste pas beaucoup de temps, où de nombreux musulmans et de nombreux juifs viendront à la Vérité: au Christ. Certaines personnes ont déjà été trouvées parmi ces peuples qui ont reçu l’Orthodoxie-pas beaucoup, c’est vrai, mais j’y vois là le début. Je prie Dieu qu’Il éclaire les autres également, comme Il m’a éclairé, et de les faire sortir des ténèbres à la Lumière; de la mort à la Vie.

“I Feel a Hunger and Thirst in My Soul for God”
”When I visited an Orthodox church, it was only in order to view another ‘tradition’…However, when I entered an Orthodox church for the first time something happened to me that I had not experienced in any Buddhist or other Eastern temple; something in my heart said that this was ‘home’, that all my search was over.” Those are the words of one of the greatest fathers of our times, a man of holy life, Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose), who lived in America, in the monastery of St. Herman of Alaska, Platina, California.
Today we are speaking with Alexy, a former Moslem, who like Fr. Seraphim, sought the truth for a long time. At the moment he discovered Christ and came to the right faith in Him—to Orthodoxy, he understood the words of the Savior: The truth shall make you free (Jn. 8:32). Although Alexy became Orthodox only one year ago, at a little over forty years of age, he impressed us with the simplicity of his faith, his sincere love of neighbor and Christ the Savior.

—I was born a Moslem. I was orphaned in childhood, and grew up with my brothers. Their personalities were the opposite of mine. They liked to be with people while I was a solitary, introverted person. Although I did not know the Lord Christ, when I heard the word of God, shivers went up my spine. I sought Him very hard. Even as a child I wanted to know where the truth is, and I sought the truth, but did not know where to find it. I lost peace, was agitated, and I did not know where to go or what to do in order to find the truth. In my ignorance I prayed, ”God help me to find the truth!” At age twenty, after experiencing a great sorrow, I found the Savior, Christ—or more correctly, He found me. I bought a book in a bookstore entitled, The Path to Christ, a book that changed my life. Then, after several years, I read the Bible. Although the New Testament made a strong impression on me, because I discovered myself once again in this book, I nevertheless did not immediately come to Orthodoxy. I wanted something that would confirm for me that the truth is in Orthodoxy. God showed me where the truth is last year during the uproar in the media over the problem of biometric passports. I knew the New Testament very well because I had read it many times, and saw that the prophecy of the Apocalypse is being fulfilled in our day. I considered this to be the sign that I was waiting for. When I was younger, a monk gave me the book, Do Not Deny Christ, written by a priest from Mt. Athos. In this book are described the events that we are now experiencing and which prepare the way for the coming of the antichrist and the mark of the beast. Thus, after this confirmation, I became Orthodox and received Baptism.
—Had you searched for truth elsewhere?
—I had read much about Yoga. But I understood that this is a great deception, because there is an essential difference between Yoga and the Divine teachings of Holy Scripture. I only studied Yoga, but Christ the Savior protected me from practicing it.
—How did your conversion take place?
—When I recognized where the truth is, I went to Fr. Arsenie (Papacioc) in Techirghiol (Romania) and there I spoke with this holy man. He taught me what I needed to do. He told me that I should speak with the priest of the parish to which I belong. I followed father’s advice, and during Great Lent my daughter and I were baptized. I used to go to church often even before Baptism. I listened to the services, but did not cross myself. I considered that since I was a Moslem, I should not make the sign of the cross on myself. Satan led me astray by this thought; only after Baptism did I begin to cross myself.
—Did your emotional state change after Baptism?
—Of course, I feel that the Lord Christ is with me and helps me. Now I fast, pray in the morning and evening, and see that no matter what I ask of my Savior, He hears me and fulfills my request. Not long ago, God desired to test my faith through my wife, who was suffering from illness. I prayed for her health, and He healed her. Looking back on those twenty years of searching, I see that God never abandoned me. While I was a Moslem, I did not say the prayers that every Christian knows: ”Our Father” (the Lord’s Prayer), ”I believe” (the Creed); I prayed as my heart suggested. Every time, God fulfilled my prayer. Today, many pray to God to give them money, wealth, or ask Him about things that are not pleasing to Him. But I pray that He would grant health to me and my family, and that He would preserve us unwavering in the right faith, so that we would not fall away from it. In these times in which we are living, it is important to remain steadfast in the true Faith.
—How did your Baptism take place?
—The priest in the church were I was baptized told me that I should choose a saint who is commemorated not long before the day that the sacrament would be performed. I was very anxious: which saint should I choose as a patron? On March 17, a few days before my baptism, I heard a talk about St. Alexy, Man of God. I was touched by his perfect humility and asceticism, and I decided to be baptized with the name Alexy. The Baptism was performed according to the Orthodox rite, I was wearing a long white robe, and father immersed me in the font three times. Although I was not immediately aware of the importance of this sacrament, with time I felt the working of the grace of the Holy Spirit. You change almost completely, but this change happens gradually.
Now I have such a hunger and thirst for God that when I enter an Orthodox bookstore it seems I could buy every book. I read and re-read the Bible, and each time I understand it more deeply. There is a sort of magnet in my soul that draws me to the word of God…
—You spoke of the sacrament of Baptism. How did the sacraments of confession and Communion act upon your soul?
—Without confession and Communion you cannot attain the Kingdom of God. They are deceived who think that if they go to church often and do good deeds, it will be enough for their salvation. There is no person without sin, and only the Savior can cleanse us with His Body and Blood which we received in holy Communion. The Savior came down to people and freed us from the chains of sins through His incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection. If He had not come, we would have died in our sins, we would be the slaves of sin. Therefore, frequent confession and Communion are needed in order to be freed from the chains by which sins keep us distant from the Most High. The more worthily you commune, the greater you are purified inwardly. The soul is like a grapevine: the better you clean it, the more beautiful it is and the better it grows; the better you cleanse the soul with confession and Communion, the more you feel that you are firmer in your faith and closer to Christ. Growing in faith, you no longer think so hard about the material; you place the spiritual first.
—Christ calls us all to salvation. But there are people amongst us who do not hear the voice of the Lord…
—I have seen that when a person is in sorrows, he thinks more about God; man seeks God when sorrows are closing in on him. I also know many unbelieving people who completely changed because of sorrows, and became good Christians. It would be good if the floods that have befallen our country would get more people to think… If they would think about God’s commandments, they would see the connection between these catastrophes and the great sins committed by the people: fornication, pornography, and homosexuality, which draw God’s righteous wrath. In the Bible there are many examples wherein we see that from the very foundation of the world, God punished people for disobedience, for lives spent in outrageous conduct.
—Which proverb from the New Testament has made the greatest impression on you?
—I especially like the proverb about the ten virgins: the five wise ones who had oil in their lamps, and the five foolish ones who had none. The lamps are faith, and oil is prayer and good works. If you do not have oil in your lamp, it does not burn. That is, if you do not pray and do good deeds, if you do not give alms and help people who are in trouble, your faith is dead. It means that you have to pray and help those near you in order to pour oil into the lamp. This oil is your light which leads you to Christ. Faith should be united with prayer and good deeds. It gladdens me when a poor person comes to me and asks me for something, because I find Christ in him. The Savior says clearly to us what He will require from us at the Judgment: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me (Mt. 25:35–36). That means that if you want to be saved, you must help very much.
—Many fear the end of the world; they fear that they will not endure this trial. What about you?
—I do not fear the end of the world. To the contrary. Then it will be seen who is in the right faith, who is in the Truth. I think that if your soul is pure and at peace with God, you need not fear anything. What do we confess in the Symbol of Faith (the Creed)? ”I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come.” There in the Kingdom of Heaven will be life with Christ—bright, pure, and completely different from the life we live now. Orthodox Christians look for this life. I know that very difficult times are coming soon. I want God to give me strength to become a confessor when He so desires it. For now, I deepen my faith, and study the Gospels in order to gain the strength to be a confessor. I know that I cannot do this by myself, but only within the unity that the Church creates. In the Apocalypse it says that when the antichrist comes, he will portray himself as the Savior and deceive many. If I will be living in those times, I want to be given the strength to tell people that the antichrist is a liar; to tell them Who the Truth is.
—Have you told your brothers that you have become Orthodox?
—I am preparing myself for that moment. They see crosses and icons in my home and car, but I have not yet told them about my Baptism. I am waiting for the appropriate moment to tell them about my changes, for their benefit.
—If they ask you, will you deny it?
—No, I will tell the truth to their faces. You know, the time will come—and not much time is left any longer—when many Moslems and Jews will come to the Truth: Christ. Some people have already been found amongst these peoples who have received Orthodoxy—not many, it’s true, but I see in this only the beginning. I pray to God that He would enlighten others also, as He enlightened me, and bring them out of darkness into Light; from death into Life.
