TROPARUL ŞI VIAŢA SFINTEI MATROANA DIN TESALONIC

Sfînta Matroana a fost slujnică la o evreică, anume Pavtila, femeia voievodului Tesalonicului. Din tinereţe, fiind învăţată în credinţa creştinească, stăpîna ei o silea la reaua credinţă iudaică. Şi, fiindcă ea nu se supunea, o chinuia foarte rău, bătînd-o adeseori. Însă Matroana pe toate le răbda cu osîrdie pentru Hristos şi la biserică se ducea într-ascuns. Într-una din zile, înştiinţîndu-se Pavtila că Matroana a fost la biserica creştinească, i-a zis: „Pentru ce n-ai mers la sinagoga noastră, ci te-ai dus la biserica creştinească?” Răspuns-a fericita Matroana cu îndrăzneală: „De vreme ce Dumnezeu este în biserica creştinească, iar de la sinagoga iudaică s-a depărtat, nu mă duc la sinagogă, ci la biserică”.

Atunci Pavtila, şi mai mult mîniindu-se, a bătut-o fără cruţare şi într-o cămară întunecoasă a închis-o legată. Iar a doua zi a fost găsită sfînta dezlegată din legături cu dumnezeiasca putere, preamărind pe Hristos. Dar stăpîna ei iarăşi a bătut-o cu vine crude, pînă la sînge şi, mai tare legînd-o, a închis-o iarăşi în cămara aceea şi uşa a pecetluit-o, ca să nu intre cineva să-i facă vreo uşurare. Şi a petrecut sfînta în acea închisoare fără hrană şi băutură patru zile, întărind-o Dumnezeu. După aceasta Pavtila, dezlegînd pecetea aceea şi deschizînd uşa, a găsit-o iarăşi dezlegată din legături şi stînd la rugăciune. Deci, fierbînd de mînie, a bătut-o cu beţe groase şi, abia suflînd, a închis-o în aceeaşi închisoare unde s-a şi sfîrşit sfînta, dîndu-şi sufletul lui Dumnezeu. Trupul ei l-a aruncat acea rea femeie de pe zid, pentru că erau înalte casele acelea. Creştinii, luînd mult chinuitul trup al Sfintei Muceniţe Matroana, l-au îngropat cu cinste.

Mai pe urmă Alexandru, episcopul Tesalonicului, a zidit o biserică în numele sfintei, iar cinstitele ei moaşte le-a pus într-însa. Iar pe Pavtila, după vrednicie, degrabă a ajuns-o judecata lui Dumnezeu, pentru că de pe înălţimea zidului, de unde a aruncat jos trupul Sfintei Matroana, ea singură, alunecînd, a căzut şi, murind rău, şi-a lepădat ticălosul ei suflet.

Η Οσία Ματρώνα έζησε στη Θεσσαλονίκη και συγκαταλέγεται μεταξύ των Μαρτύρων των πρώτων αιώνων της Εκκλησίας μας, κατά την περίοδο των διωγμών. Συνελήφθη την έδεσαν και άρχισαν να την μαστιγώνουν, ψελλίζοντας με αδύναμη φωνή λίγες λέξεις προσευχής παρέδωσε το πνεύμα της.

The Holy Martyr Matrona of Thessalonica suffered in the third or fourth century. She was a slave of the Jewish woman Pautila (or Pantilla), wife of one of the military commanders of Thessalonica. Pautila constantly mocked her slave for her faith in Christ, and tried to convert her to Judaism. St Matrona, who believed in Christ from her youth, still prayed to the Savior Christ, and secretly went to church unbeknownst to her vengeful mistress.

Pautila, learning that St Matrona had been to church, asked, „Why won’t you come to our synagogue, instead of attending the Christian church?” St Matrona boldly answered, „Because God is present in the Christian church, but He has departed from the Jewish synagogue.” Pautila went into a rage and mercilessly beat St Matrona, tied her up, and shut her in a dark closet. In the morning, Pautila discovered that St Matrona had been freed of her bonds by an unknown Power.

In a rage Pautila beat the martyr almost to death, then bound her even more tightly and locked her in the closet. The door was sealed so that no one could help the sufferer. The holy martyr remained there for four days without food or water, and when Pautila opened the door, she again found St Matrona free of her bonds, and standing at prayer.

Pautila flogged the holy martyr and left the skin hanging in strips from her body. The fierce woman locked her in the closet again, where St Matrona gave up her spirit to God.

Pautila had the holy martyr’s body thrown from the roof of her house. Christians took up the much-suffered body of the holy martyr and buried it. Later, Bishop Alexander of Thessalonica built a church dedicated to the holy martyr. Her holy relics, glorified by many miracles, were placed in this church.

The judgment of God soon overtook the evil Pautila. Standing on the roof at that very place where the body of St Matrona had been thrown, she stumbled and fell to the pavement. Her body was smashed, and so she received her just reward for her sin.

Γνώμην ἀήττητον, Ματρώνα φέρουσα, πίστιν τὴν ἔνθεον, ἄσυλον ἔσωσας, μὴ δουλωθεῖσα τὴν ψυχήν, Ἑβραίων τὴ ἀπηνεία ὅθεν ἀριστεύσασα, καὶ τὸν δόλιον κτείνασα, μυστικῶς νενύμφευσαι, τῷ Δεσπότῃ τῆς κτίσεως. Αὐτὸν οὒν ἐκτενῶς ἐκδυσώπει, πάσης ἠμᾶς ρυσθήναι βλάβης.
