TROPARUL SF. MC. AGATA

(5 februarie)

UKRAINIAN SCHISMATICS PRESSURING ROMANIAN-SPEAKING FAITHFUL TO JOIN THEM (En)

Bukovina, Ukraine, September 25, 2019

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church met on February 21, discussing, among other things, the ongoing Ukrainian church crisis. In their report, the hierarchs noted that they are especially concerned about the 127 Romanian-speaking parishes in Bukovina, neighboring Romania, and the preservation of their ethnicity and language.

To this end, the Synod decided that “it is necessary to obtain written guarantees from the Church authorities that … they will have the opportunity to organize into a Romanian vicariate and to cultivate their spiritual connection with the Romanian Patriarchate,” noting that a Ukrainian vicariate has operated in Romania since 1990.

The Synod did not explicitly state if it was referring to the authorities of the canonical Ukrainian Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, or those of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) under “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko, or both, but the schismatics were quick to jump on the opportunity, announcing in early March that they were prepared to create such a vicariate.

The Synod of Bishops of the OCU resolved on July 27 to create this vicariate, though, to date, it does not include a single one of the 127 Romanian parishes. The schismatics are planning to change that, however, with the help of their usual tactics.

A source in the Romanian Orthodox Church told the Ukrainian outlet Vesti that “the OCU is putting strong pressure on the priests and laity to fill up the Romanian vicariate, and it could lead to the creation of rival Romanian-speaking structures in Ukraine.” Continuă să citești

GREEK METROPOLITAN SERAPHIM OF KYTHIRA: CONSTANTINOPLE’S ACTIONS DIVIDE UKRAINE, GREEK SYNOD, MT. ATHOS, ENTIRE CHURCH (En)

Serafim Kythira

Kythira, Greece, September 24, 2019

The granting of autocephaly to the so-called “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) was lawlessly done under the pressure of geopolitical interest and deeply split not only the Ukrainian people, but also the Local Orthodox Churches, the Holy Mountain, and the Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church, His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira and Antikythera of the Greek Orthodox Church believes, as he wrote in a statement published on the Greek site vimaorthodoxias.gr.

As he has publicly said before, the wisest solution to the Ukrainian debacle created by Constantinople’s ill-conceived and clumsy interference there would be to entrust the issue to a pan-Orthodox council of primates and representatives of the Local Churches. Met. Seraphim is in good company, as Synods, primates, and hierarchs from throughout the entire Orthodox world have continually called for a pan-Orthodox council to be called, though Patriarch Bartholomew has continually refused to hear the entreaties of his brother bishops.

Met. Seraphim has also called on his brother hierarchs in the Greek Church not to concelebrate with hierarchs and clergy from the schismatic OCU, as several hierarchs of the Greek Church have already done, lawlessly, as the Greek Synod has not entered into communion with the nationalist schismatics from Ukraine. REPENTANCE CANNOT BE REPLACED OR ANNULLED – A Letter to the Holy Synod of Greece About the Ukrainian Schismatic Church

SUBJECT: Regarding the institutional legitimization of the schismatic church of Ukraine

Most Blessed Primate,

Reverend Holy Hierarchs,

With regard to the upcoming convocation of the Holy Synod of Hierarchs, as the least member of our local Church, but also as professor of the Church’s Dogmatic Theology, I would like—with a sense of responsibility—myself humbly to put into Your view some Dogmatic-Ecclesiological dimensions, as well as some soteriological ramifications of unconditionally accepting the schismatic Church of Ukraine into ecclesiastical-sacramental communion, in the event, of course, of an eventual Synodal decision by You to recognize its “autocephaly”.

The first and most important issue is, in this case, the Ecclesiological issue, which is relevant to the “ecclesiastical construct” in question. First of all, it should be examined whether this “construct” fulfills the conditions of an Ecclesiastical Community. If, on the contrary, its “autocephaly” is recognized, then the ecclesiastical “legitimacy” of the Schismatic Church is automatically recognized.

As is well-known, there has previously been Pan-Orthodox condemnation of the Schismatic Church of Ukraine with defrocking and excommunication. This Pan-Orthodox condemnation has not been revoked. Finally, with the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Tomos of Autocephaly (January 6, 2019), an institutional overreach of a spiritual and ecclesiological character occurred, which raises reasonable questions about its ecclesiastical legitimacy. And this is because, at least as far as we know, the fundamental patristic and spiritual conditions were not met, something that raises reasonable objections to the canonicity of the terms and conditions of the Patriarchal Praxis, so long as there has not been public repentance and renunciation of Schism. What we are saying in the case in question does not mean that we are calling into question the institutional competence of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to grant Autocephaly with the consent, of course, of the entire of body of the Church expressed synodally. Here only the issue of the valid conditions for issuing the Tomos in question is being raised.

According to scriptural testimonies (Matthew 4:17, 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 and 2 Corinthians 2:6-8), as well as according to the Patristic and Spiritual tradition of the Church, the integration or reintegration into the one and indivisible body of the Church in any case presupposes a profound experience and sincere expression of repentance on the part of the member or wider community being integrated or reintegrated.

The condition of expressing repentance is not invalidated or annulled by any institutional person or institutional ecclesiastical body. There exists no Ecclesiastical Economy that can replace or annul repentance. Repentance itself constitutes the fundamental condition and spiritual “key” to receiving and possessing the Economy of salvation, as well as the “key” to activating or reactivating it, in accordance with the testimony of Scripture: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17).

For precisely this reason, the Meletian Schism in the ancient Church was restored after not only expression of repentance, but also the anathematization of the Schism by the Schismatics themselves. And, as St Theodore the Studite characteristically notes, “anathematizing their own schism, as they say, they are received into the Catholic Church” (Letter 40 to Naukratios, PG 99 1053C). Only then did there follow the synodal Pan-Orthodox restoration at the First Ecumenical Council.

In the case of the Schismatic Church of Ukraine, as it appears, no repentance was sought or expressed. Here, in practice, repentance was annulled, even though it is an explicit commandment of the Lord and the age-old practice of the Church. There can be no talk of Ecclesiastical Economy for this. In fact, this is a flagrant ecclesiastical transgression, which makes salvation impossible, not only for the Schismatics, but also for those who sacramentally commune with them, since they too become excommunicates (see Canon 2 of the Council of Antioch, which was validated by the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Ecumenical Councils).

From the above, it becomes clear that the issue in question is essentially Ecclesiological-Dogmatic, with inevitable soteriological ramifications, as has already been very rightly expressed in the Letter of the Hagiorite Elders to the Sacred Community of the Holy Mountain (March 2019).

For this reason it is also essential that the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy decide on the identity of the Schismatic Church of Ukraine and to demand the application of the age-old ecclesiastical conditions for its reintegration. That is, repentance and the anathematization of the Schism. This spiritual responsibility is fully within the competence of the Hierarchy about to recognize the “Autocephaly” in question, which of course has other parameters of Canonicity, so long as it does not take into account the existence of the Canonical Church in the same country, under Metropolitan Onufry of Kyiv, the Canonical Church from which it split. That is to say, “Autocephaly” has, in this case, been granted to unabashed schismatics. And this unprecedented matter, which is logically, canonically and spiritually unthinkable, is now being asked to occur with the Synodal consent of our Church.

With the “rationale” for accepting the Tomos of “Autocephaly” of the Schismatic Church of Ukraine, we are in danger of possibly also being led in the future to the sacramental acceptance of Papism and other heresies without the fundamental conditions of repentance and the renunciation of their dogmatic delusions, something that Ecumenism attempts today, not only in theory but already in practice. So we wonder, essentially, whether the spiritual institutions within our Church have begun to “function” devoid of their spiritual foundation. We wonder whether in recent decades a “new ethos” has been introduced with the hidden aspiration to become the habitual ethos also in customary law, which will undermine the Canonical Tradition of the Church. Historically, we know that when such a mentality was consolidated in the West, the Western Church was led to Papism– with all its dogmatic deviations– and ended up cut off from the One and only Church.

To summarize, we note that any eventual decision about the “Autocephaly” of the Schismatic Church of Ukraine cannot be unconditional. Because then– indirectly but clearly– it would mean in practice an illegal ecclesiastical-institutional “legalization” of the existing Schism, something that has no historical precedent in the Ecclesiastical Tradition of the Holy Fathers. Most importantly, the eventual recognition without spiritual conditions gravely harms the unity of the entire Church, something than which there is nothing more precious. The danger is clear– that of creating Schisms throughout the entire Church on account of your eventual assent to recognizing the “Autocephaly” of the Schismatic Church of Ukraine, something that we wish to avoid with all our heart.

Finally, the spiritual solution to the current ecclesiastical problem is repentance. And unfortunately, at the moment this is lacking. Nevertheless, there is realistic hope. Those of us who love the Church in Christ, let us ourselves take the cleansing and deifying medicine of repentance and then Christ will give healing to the sick, according to the testimony of the Holy Fathers [see St Nicholas Cabasilas: “everyone marvels at God’s goodness, though no one escapes an illness when someone else takes the medicine, seeking to be released from chastisement while others suffer” On the Life in Christ, Part 7, PG 150 700C) Here some may marvel at the goodness of God. No one can be rid of illness without taking the medicine. Can someone be rid of the consequences of sin when others do the work for them?]

The hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and faithful of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church were out in force yesterday, sanctifying the streets of their cities and towns with cross processions in honor of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, when the Church commemorates the great triumph over the iconoclasts and proclaims the truth of the one Orthodox Church.

More than 20,000 Ukrainian faithful participated in cross processions in Odessa, Zaporozhye, and Rivne. More than 10,000 participated in the procession in Odessa alone, reports the diocesan press service.

Following the Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Agafangel of Odessa at the city’s Holy Transfiguration Cathedral, clergy and parishioners from throughout the city began to arrive at the church, with the citywide procession beginning at noon with a prayer for peace in Ukraine and the welfare of its pious people.

More than 10,000 pilgrims came out bearing holy icons and relics and the holy Cross, singing Church hymns. Following the procession, Met. Agafangel read a prayer for the preservation of Ukraine from all troubles and sorrows, after which he addressed those gathered with an archpastoral word, emphasizing the importance of preserving the holy Orthodox faith.

At the same time, a large procession made its way through the central streets of Zaporozhye with the miraculous Kasperov Icon of the Mother of God, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye and Melitopol, reports the diocesan press service.

A number of Cossacks participated in the procession, showing their strong faith in the protection of the Mother of God and their loyalty to the true Ukrainian Church.

The procession made its way to the Holy Protection Cathedral where the rite of the Triumph of Orthodoxy was celebrated. Met. Luke also addressed the crowd with a word on the importance of preserving the unity of the holy Orthodox Church.

“Remember what the holy Apostle Paul said: And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit Which is given unto us (Rom. 5:3-5). I wish all of us strength of spirit on this saving path of Great Lent, and that our souls, having accomplished the feat of repentance, would become real lamps, light to this world,” Met. Luke said, encouraging his flock.

Several thousands of faithful also took part in the cross procession in Rivne, led by the diocesan vicar His Grace Bishop Pimen of Dubenske, with the blessing of the ruling hierarch His Eminence Metropolitan Bartholomew of Rivne and Ostrog.

The faithful from the city and the surrounding region processed nearly 2 miles bearing the patronal icons of all of the churches of Rivne and the miraculous icons of the diocesan monasteries.

The procession ended at St. George’s Cathedral courtyard, where a solemn moleben of the Triumph of Orthodoxy was celebrated, after which Bp. Pimen addressed the faithful with an archpastoral word.

SCHISMATIC-NATIONALISTS ASSAULT CANONICAL BISHOP, LOCK CLERGY AND FAITHFUL IN CHURCH (+VIDEO) [En]

Luka-Meleshkovskaya, Ukraine, March 18, 2019

The clergy and faithful of the Holy Transfiguration Church in the Vinnitsa village of Luka-Meleshkovskaya, having been locked in the church by impious nationalist-schismatics, were forced to knock down the door of their church to defend their bishop who was being physically assaulted in the church yard.

The Divine Liturgy was to begin at 8:30 on Saturday morning, but schismatic-nationalists filled the locks off the doors with resin the night before to prevent the faithful from entering the church. Nevertheless, the parishioners cut the locks to the doors and guarded the church overnight. In the morning they were locked inside.

Local media spread false reports that random bullies had gone to the church and broken the windows and doors, but in fact the local faithful, who had been guarding their church from seizure overnight, were attempting to get out, reports the press service of the Vinnitsa Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

“All the Vinnitsa media are writing about how they broke the doors and windows in Luka-Meleshkovskaya. But everything began with them locking up Fr. Basil, the rector of the church, and using physical force against me, the ruling hierarch,” His Grace Bishop Barsanuphius of Vinnitsa and Bar wrote on his Facebook page.

The bishop said that he went to meet with the “activists” to hear them out, but they weren’t interested in listening to him as well.

“When Chirkun, a priest of Vladyka Simeon [the former canonical hierarch of Vinntisa—O.C.] arrived, he gave the command to throw me over the fence of the church. That’s how they propose to peacefully resolve controversial issues,” Bp. Barsanuphius wrote.

When they began to use physical force against the bishop and to force him up against the fence, Fr. Vasily and the parishioners saw it from within the church and decided to force the emergency doors open, causing them damage, to get to Bp. Barsanuphius to protect him.

The main moments of the confrontation were captured on video. The faithful were eventually able to enter the church again, with Bp. Barsanuphius celebrating the Divine Liturgy.

The Holy Transfiguration parish voted in favor of remaining in the canonical Ukrainian Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine on January 26, though the territorial community met the same day in the local country club, voting to transfer to the schismatic church. The religious community then regathered in the church and recognized the country club vote as invalid.

UKRAINIAN COUNTERINTELLIGENCE AGENCY SUMMONING PRIESTS EN MASSE FOR INTERROGATION

The Patriarchate of Constantinople is morally responsible for the present oppression of the Church in Ukraine, one Church representative said.

Rivne and Sarny, Ukraine, December 3, 2018

The Ukrainian Security Service, the nation’s successor to the KGB and counterintelligence and anti-terrorism agency, has begun summoning priests of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church for interrogation.

About 20 priests of the Rivne Diocese and the deans of the Sarny Diocese of the Ukrainian Church recently received summons for questioning from the Ukrainian Security Service in the Rivne Province, all being called to appear on Wednesday at 10:00 AM.

The Rivne Diocese is among the many that have officially expressed their support for the canonical status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its primate His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine.

News of the summons comes just after Security Service employees took part in an unannounced “inventory” of sacred items at the Kiev Caves Lavra and three buses full of Security Service members searched the residence of the Lavra’s abbot His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshgorod and Chernobyl. It was also earlier reported that the Service has been summoning hierarchs as well.

The Ukrainian government has also begun systematically depriving the brethren of the Pochaev Lavra of the right to the monastery’s buildings.

According to the Union of Orthodox Journalists, the priests of the Dubno Deanery in the Rivne Province are the first to be targeted by the Security Services.

The priests were summoned to be questioned as witnesses but with no explanation as to what they would be testifying about, reports the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Continuă să citești

MET. SERAPHIM OF PIRAEUS: CONSTANTINOPLE HAS NO RIGHT TO HEAR APPEALS FROM AND GRANT AUTOCEPHALY TO UKRAINE

Piraeus, Greece, October 23, 2018

His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus (Greek Orthodox Church) has published his view on the Ukrainian matter following the Holy Synod of Constantinople’s October 11 statement that announced its decision to restore the anathematized Philaret Denisenko of the schismatic “Kiev Patriarchate” and Makary Maletich of the schismatic “Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church” as clergy and reclaim Ukraine as its territory, which it ceased to be in 1686.

His full statement appears on the Greek portal Romfea, with the main points reproduced on Sedmitza.

He also spoke out a month ago, warning the Ukrainian government that the Church must not be involved in geopolitical games, stating, “You are playing a terrible geopolitical and geostrategic game between NATO and the Russian Federation, so understand that these things cannot be used as tools in the Church.”

Without questioning the Ecumenical Patriarch’s primacy of honor, and acknowledging the first throne’s canonically justified right of “honorary chairmanship at an Ecumenical Council and coordination of the Orthodox Churches,” Met. Seraphim offers a significant clarification on the authority of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The Greek hierarch writes that Constantinople has the right to grant autocephaly or autonomy at the request of the canonical Church structure, having in view its approval at a future Ecumenical Council. He notes that the debate about the procedure for granting autocephaly has been going on for 50 years, and this point, the agreed upon principle he refers to includes three elements: the petition of a canonical Church, the agreement of the Mother Church, and the approval of the other autocephalous Local Orthodox Churches.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate previously agreed to these principles in its official position on autocephaly and autonomy, and in the 1993 pre-conciliar agreement of Chambésy, Switzerland, November 1993. Continuă să citești

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RAISING CHILDREN “FROM CHILDHOOD” (MARK 9:21) (En)

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RAISING CHILDREN
“FROM CHILDHOOD” (MARK 9:21)

4th Sunday of Lent 4-4-1965 Athens

Speech in full, by Fr. Augoustinos Kantiotes,

My beloved Chri1.atenizei-Εσταυρωμenostians, did you hear the Gospel reading? Today, Mark the Evangelist narrates a miracle to us. One of the innumerable miracles that our Lord Jesus Christ did, doesand will do until the end of the ages.
The Evangelist narrates how the Lord healed a youth, a youth who had suffered —may God protect us— a terrible illness. He suffered from a demon, he was possessed. The Gospel says that this youth was in a miserable state, because he had ears, but Satan had blocked his ears so he couldn’t hear any conversations. He had a tongue, but the devil had tied it in a knot and he couldn’t utter a word. And when he had one of his crisis’ he fell sometimes into the fire and sometimes into the water, he foamed at the mouth, gnashing his teeth, and writhed like a fish out of water. So therefore this youth was in a miserable state. But his father was even more miserable. And where nobody could heal this youth, Christ healed him.
I am not going to take this Gospel reading word by word to analyze it and present all its rich teachings, my beloved. But if you will allow me, I will give a short homily and I plead with you to pay attention to only one point. What is this point? It is a question that our Lord Jesus Christ directed to the father, and the answer that the father gave Christ. The question is, Christ asks the father: How long has this been going on? When did this start? When did the youth get sick? Continuă să citești

Ieronymos spoke on the occasion of a recent government proposal to make easier for students to be exempted from religious education classes.

“The recent incident regarding religious education classes is the tip of the iceberg, I’m afraid. It seems that our European friends — taking advantage of our dire economic situation and in light of changing the economic relations between us — will seek by all means to alter Greek society starting with our schools,” Ieronymos said, addressing the Annual Conference of the Holy Synod.
